Temporary local rule for tree stumps

by Mr Geoff Kelly @ 02:59 PM, 11th May 2023

New temporary local rules provide relief from cut tree stumps and log piles.

Following a number of trees damaged by storms and cut down, tree stumps remain pending ultimate removal, and in some cases, branches and logs remain pending removal. While the logs and branches can be regarded as GUR from the local rule definition that includes fallen branches, and the definition of Ground Under Repair in the rules of golf includes material piled for removal, the explicit rule has been added for clarity.

Tree Stumps

Cut Tree Stumps in the General Area can be treated as Abnormal Ground Condition. Where a Cut Tree Stump interferes with the lie of the player’s ball or the area of the player’s intended swing, relief without penalty may be taken under Rule 16.1

Log Piles

Log Piles in the General Area can be treated as GUR. Where a Log Pile interferes with the lie of the player’s ball or the area of the player’s intended swing, relief without penalty may be taken under Rule 16.1.

In both cases the ball may be lifted and dropped within one club-length of, and not nearer to the hole than, the nearest point of full relief.
